Description: The Halemau’u Trail starts at the Haleakala Crater Road in the native shrubland ecosystem and leads ten miles into the Haleakala Crater and across the crater floor. Hikers can choose to do a 2 mile round trip hike out to the edge of the valley and return, or can use this trail as a starting point for an all day hike. After the first mile, the trail reaches the edge of the erosional valley and affords excellent views on a clear day. From this point, the trail descends switchbacks to the valley wall to the floor almost 1500 feet below. Four miles out the trail reaches Holua cabin and campsite (permits required for overnight stays). From Holua Cabin, Halemau’u Trail continues across the crater floor six more miles to Paliku Campground.

Description: Leleiwi Overlook is reached by an easy .25 mile round trip trail. The views at the end of the trail encompass a colorful volcanic landscape of cinder cones within the Wilderness Area.

Description: The Kuloa Point Trail is a 0.5 mile easy loop with interpretive panels along the route. The trail leads from the Kipahulu Visitor Center down to the ocean at Kuloa Point past historic walls and pre-contact Hawaiian habitation sites. The trail passes a grove of hala trees on the way to beautiful views of the ocean and several large pools. Swimming is at your own risk. There are no lifeguards on duty. Serious injuries and deaths have occurred due to people jumping into the water from the cliffs above. The ocean currents at Kuloa Point are very strong and sharks and high surf are constant dangers. Description: The Kipuka Puaulu Trail takes you on a stroll through an upland mesic forest oasis surrounded by more recent lava flows from Mauna Loa. This trail follows a gentle incline. Sights of interest along this trail are Kipuka, old-growth forest of koa and ‘ohi’a, birds and insects.

Description: The Kilauea Iki Trail descends 400 feet through rain forest, crosses the crater floor, passes Pu’u Pua’i cinder cone and returns via the crater’s rim. Sights of interest on this trail are the rain forest, birds, insects, 1959 lava lake, steam vents, cinder and spatter cone. You should bring water. Expect wet and windy weather and some steep and rocky terrain. Follow the rock cairns across the crater floor.
